Salt, pepper, and spice mills, basically exactly the same as coffee grinders, generally tend not to have a handle, the whole top revolving instead. Even though this is not as comfortable, only a couple of turns are necessary to grind enough. The ground pepper falls straight upon the food getting seasoned, the mill has no container.
A small number of mills have rough surfaces which don’t turn, each press of the grips moves just one flat plate against another, then the plates are returned to their first location by a spring. Quite a few hard spices are on the market in storage containers including a straightforward cone burr grinder, designed to be thrown away when empty. The majority of mills can be altered to set the coarseness of grind.
